Executive Director

Across the globe, the people behind the Jane Goodall Institute work tirelessly to bring to life Jane’s dream to live in harmony with nature. They believe that every single individual matters and can make an impact on the planet every day. At JGI Belgium (JGI BE), we believe we can make a difference through our focussed approach on our three key initiatives: Tree planting, Youth empowerment and Animal protection.

As one of the chapters in the international JGI organization (JGI Global), JGI Belgium also has an important role in helping to raise funds for projects in Africa. These significant projects include protection of chimpanzee habitats, chimpanzee welfare, community centred conservation and environmental education.

JGI BE is a small organisation founded in 2005, 100% volunteer-based.

Currently, approximately 15 volunteers take care of daily tasks, a team of about 10 other volunteers work in the translation department and about 20 others help with other tasks, such as during events. They are supported by the Executive Director (ED) and a dedicated group of 10 Board members.

We are currently looking for a passionate entrepreneurial willing and able to take a small initiative with loads of potential to the next level, growing with it.



The ED manages all activities for JGI Belgium. Working closely with the Board, the ED is responsible for strategy development and for operational implementation, which includes fundraising and growing the Institute’s profile and influence nationally to achieve our mission.

A self-starter, strong entrepreneurial leader, with strong affinities and commitments to the ethos and goals of JGI BE, the ED is able to confidently communicate and showcase the values and work of JGI BE, lead the volunteers in delivering on the organisations’ commitments and work with the Board on growing the organisation’s profile and impact. S/he is a self-starter with high-energy levels, resilience and tenacity and enjoys working with and in a team

Reports to: President



1. Management:

a) Maintain and develop effective communications and relationships with existing and future volunteers, board members, supporters, suppliers, partners/sponsors, donors, regulatory and official bodies.
b) Oversee the management and development of JGI BE infrastructure, including resources, future staff and volunteers, and provide them with support to deliver their roles as appropriate.
c) Actively manage the number and skills of volunteers and supporters to maximise the resources available to deliver the organisations’ operation.
d) Protect and enhance the reputation of the organisation, its culture and values.
e) Act as an ambassador and key spokesperson for JGI BE.
f) Responsible for successful organisation and implementation of fundraising events, awareness-raising activities and communication products.

2. Strategy:

a) With the board, develop a growth plan with appropriate measures to track performance and realise goals.
b) Oversee the implementation and constantly review JGI BE organisational strategy.
c) Develop and establish an approach to raising JGI BE profile nationally.

3. Governance:

a) Support the process of preparing board papers, the board agenda and ensure the delivery of actions arising from board meetings.
b) Financial management of incomes & expenditures including an active role in preparing budgets and revised forecasts together with the finance team.
c) Ensure compliance with administrative obligations to relevant regulatory authorities.
d) Protect the organisation from risk and take responsibility for the management and review of the risk register, as guided by the board members.

4. Fundraising:

a) In conjunction with the board, develop, establish and lead an income generation strategy and implementation plan.
b) Create and implement cultivation plans with prospects (corporate and individuals), including developing tailored proposals that are aligned with donor interests and motivations.
c) Oversee institutional grants applications.



Experience in: Minimum 3 years in a similar position

  • Enthusing, leading, and motivating a team of volunteers, in particular youth groups, and securing buy-in from people at all levels
  • Growing a non-profit programme and its income
  • Formulating strategy and policy
  • Dealing with professionals, government and organisational partners at senior level
  • Designing and managing programmes and budgets
  • Working with a range of international cultures
  • Meet deadlines, planning, prioritising and working under pressure
  • Working with the media and in public speaking (desirable)
  • Nature conservation / or wider conservation (desirable)
  • Non-profit governance and working with boards (desirable)

  • Able to be flexible about working hours, evening and weekends are required at times
  • Able to travel from time to time (mostly nationally with rare travel abroad)

Salary range: up to 4000€ gross salary/month + 13th month & holidays
